DALE PRUNTY CLOSES SEASON WITH A MODIFIED FEATURE WIN

The Midwest Modifieds were the alternate class to run this past Saturday. Steve Johanneck (1) jets away at the green flag. Wes Biswell was in hot pursuit, as he shot by Ken Wills for second. Three cars went for a loop in the three-four corners on lap five. Dave Naumann (72) seemed to be the culprit as he was found to be leaking fluid. Johanneck left the pack behind when racing resumed. The dual was for second between, Dale Prunty and Biswell. Leader Johanneck, was about to pass a slower car, when he got a little to close. They bounced off each other, which brought out another caution. Johanneck was sent to the rear because of the contact rule. Dale Prunty was now in charge of the race. Prunty had second place runner, Jeff Holtz (91) pull to his side, but Prunty was a hair quicker and held him off.

Yet another caution for debris on the track on lap twenty of the fifty. Racing quickly resumed for seven more laps then caution again for more debris. Somebody was shedding parts like a hound shedding in spring.

The fans had been keeping an eye on former leader, Steve Johanneck, as he was climbing back to the front. By lap forty, Johanneck had fought his way back to second. It was side by side racing with five laps to go. Prunty had the narrowest of lead when the caution came again on lap forty-six. Eddie Bentfield (4) started to drop more fluid on the racing surface. The racing had fans on their feet, as it was door handle to door handle, with four laps to go. When the checkered flag waved, Dale Prunty of Allenton collects the feature trophy. Steve Johanneck gave it a great run, but had to settle for second. Ken Wills of West Bend cruised through for third.

September 15th, 2002 - Slinger Super Speedway

The Midwest modified 30-lap feature was full of drama as Ron Schmitt scored his first career feature win and Dan Jung edged Dale Prunty for the track championship.

Schmitt raced into the lead at the start as Ed Grober fell into second place just ahead of a four-car battle for third involving Larry Reihbrandt, Jung, Wes Biswell, and Prunty. Jung and Prunty entered the race tied for the points lead, meaning whichever driver finished ahead of the other would win the championship.

While Schmitt continued to lead, Jeff Holtz joined the fight for third place and contact amongst that tight group of cars littered the front stretch with debris, producing the yellow flag. When racing resumed, Schmitt and Grober raced out in front of the field as Reihbrandt held third place right in front of Jung and Prunty who were side-by-side. Jung held the inside lane and Prunty took to the top of the speedway over the final six laps in a torrid battle for not only the position, but the track title as well.

Schmitt remained out front and scored his first career win and Grober capped off another strong performance by finishing second. Jung and Prunty remained door-to-door on the final lap with Reihbrandt directly ahead of them. Reihbrandt drifted wide and went to the high side which briefly slowed Prunty’s outside charge and at the stripe, Jung was third followed by Reihbrandt and Prunty in a close finish. The finish gave Jung is first career track championship by a slim margin over Prunty.

Reihbrandt won the dash and Holtz set fast time with a 12.518 second lap.

September 9th, 2002 - Slinger Super Speedway

The already tight battle for the track championship between Dale Prunty, Dan Jung, and Jeff Holtz in the Midwest modified division narrowed even further after Prunty won his sixth feature of the season while Jung and Holtz finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Ed Grober led at the start of the 30-lap event and checked out to a five car length advantage over Dan Miller and Larry Reighbrandt. Prunty used the outer groove to catch and pass both Miller and Reihbrandt to claim second place by lap ten. Prunty closed in on Grober for the top spot while Jung and Holtz raced their way toward the front, taking over the fourth and fifth spots by lap 17. Prunty stayed in the outside lane and charged around Grober for the lead on lap 18. Once out front, Prunty could not be caught and he took the win. Grober capped off his best performance of the season by finishing second. Miller finished third and Jung held off Holtz for fifth.

Prunty now sits just six points behind Jung in the season standings heading into the final point night next Sunday. Holtz is in third place, 63 points behind Jung.

Prunty and Jung staged a whale of a battle for the lead throughout the 18-lap Midwest modified Race of Champions before Prunty edged Jung for the win at the checkered flag.

Holtz was right behind the lead duo in third place at the finish while Miller came home in fourth place just ahead of Wes Biswell in fifth.

Russ Grade raced to the win in the dash and Prunty was the fastest qualifier after posting a lap of 12.551 seconds.

September 1st, 2002 - Slinger Super Speedway

Jeff Holtz charged to his fourth win of the season in the caution-filled 30-lap Midwest modified feature.

The race was barely under the green flag when Russ Grade’s car faltered at the start and in an effort to avoid the situation, Larry Reihbrandt slammed the turn one wall. The incident had major implications on the chase for the season championship as point leader Dale Prunty became collected in the wreck and was forced to retire from the event. Dan Jung, who sits in second place in the season points, led the complete restart and Holtz, the third place point man, got around Andy Evraets to grab second.

Jung clung to the inside of the track as Holtz tried numerous times to make the outer groove work.  Several times Holtz moved alongside Jung and both drivers raced so close they nearly touched wheels many times during the race’s middle stages. After Evraets and Mike Graczkowski tangled on lap 17 to bring out the caution flag, Holtz again took to the outer groove on the restart to challenge Jung for the lead. This time Holtz was able to make the maneuver work and he cleared Jung to take the top spot while exiting the second turn. Once out front, Holtz pulled away and captured the win over Jung who was forced to settle for second. Dan Miller drove to a third place finish as Ed Grober and Lenny Gallenberg rounded out the top five. Russ Grade raced to the win in the dash and Wes Biswell set fast time at 12.578 seconds.

August 25th, 2002 - Slinger Super Speedway

Wes Biswell chalked up his third win of the season by claiming top honors in the 30-lap Midwest modified feature.

Gregg Pawelski led a closely bunched field to the start and held the top spot throughout much of the first half of the event while Biswell, Ed Grober, Dan Jung, and Ron Schmitt fought for positions behind him. Dale Prunty and Jeff Holtz soon joined the lead group after advancing from their row five starting spots.

Pawelski maintained the lead until lap 20 when Biswell was able to race around on the outside for the top spot. Pawelski became caught up behind lapped cars and Grober and Jung also passed him to move into second and third place respectively. Schmitt and Holtz bounced off each other while racing for fifth which momentarily slowed both drivers. Prunty muscled Pawelski out of the top five on the final lap as Biswell held off Grober to take the win. Jung crossed the finish line in third ahead of Prunty and Schmitt.

Prunty turned the fastest lap in qualifying with a time of 12.604 seconds and Schmitt won the fast dash.

August 18th, 2002 - Slinger Super Speedway

Jeff Holtz kept his championship hopes alive as he chalked up his third win of the season in the 30-lap Midwest modified feature.

The event got off to a slow start as numerous cars spun in turn one to necessitate a complete restart and once the race got underway, Ron Schmitt charged into the early lead. Contact in the middle of the field resulted in Larry Reihbrandt and Russ Grade spinning in turn three, bringing out another caution flag after only one lap was complete. Back under green, Schmitt remained out front as Holtz advanced into second place on lap four. Gregg Pawelski, Wes Biswell, and Dale Prunty staged a three-way battle for fourth place behind Ed Grober as Holtz pressured Schmitt for the lead. Pawelski and Prunty got caught in the outside lane and Biswell and Dan Miller were able to get by.

Holtz continued to stalk Schmitt for the lead at the halfway mark but could not make a pass as the two caught the tail end of the field. Schmitt, who was looking for his first career win, held off Holtz, the defending track champion, until lap 25 when Holtz was able to use the outside lane to move alongside. Schmitt held his ground on the inside and put up a valiant effort before Holtz was able to take sole possession of the lead with three laps to go. Holtz raced to his third feature win of the season and gained points on Prunty and Dan Jung as both drivers finished out of the top five. Schmitt took the checkered flag in second, his best finish of the season, and Biswell was third. Grober and Miller completed the top five.

In other Midwest modified action, Schmitt also won the dash and Reihbrandt set fast time at 12.568 seconds.

August 11th, 2002 - Slinger Super Speedway

Staying in the low groove allowed Dan Miller (#33) to fend off Dale Prunty (#17) for the win in the Midwest Modified main event.

Dan Miller led a pack of six cars across the line to win the Midwest modified 30-lap feature.

Miller started from the pole position and immediately raced into the lead ahead of Andy Evraets, Ron Schmitt, and Dale Prunty. Prunty began to march forward by lap 17 as he was challenging Evraets for second, bringing along Dan Jung, Wes Biswell, and Jeff Holtz to join the fight for the lead. Miller was able to sneak away to a rather large lead as the rest of the drivers in the top five raced hard for position.

A spin by Kurt Brown brought out the caution flag and erased Miller’s advantage on lap 20. Another slow-down for a David McCardle spin on lap 26 set up a four lap dash toward the finish that began with Prunty moving to the outside to challenge Miller for the lead while Evraets had his hands full with Biswell and Jung. Prunty bobbled in turn two on lap 27 and that was enough for Miller to drive to victory. Prunty was forced to settle for second and Biswell edged Evraets for third. Jung finished fifth just ahead of Holtz as the top six cars finished close together.

Jung took top honors in the dash and Holtz had the fastest qualifying lap at 12.605 seconds.

August 4th, 2002 - Slinger Super Speedway

Dale Prunty (#17) earned quick time honors in the Midwest Modified field in qualifying.

Dan Jung found himself in the right place at the right time to pick up the Midwest modified feature win.

Ron Schmitt shot into the lead at the start as Wes Biswell, Jung, and Dale Prunty followed close behind. Jeff Holtz moved forward and joined the lead battle by the halfway mark as Schmitt continued to look impressive by maintaining the lead. Schmitt’s charge at his first ever feature win was slowed a bit when Ed Grober and Gregg Pawelski spun in turn one to bring out the caution flag with five laps to go.

Schmitt led the restart with Biswell close on his tail as Jung held down third followed by Holtz and Prunty, who seemed to fighting an ignition problem. As the green flag flew, Biswell and Schmitt came together in turn two, sending Schmitt spinning into the infield as the yellow flag waved again. Biswell was placed at the tail end of the field for his involvement in the situation, giving the lead to Jung. Jung led the final four laps and took the win ahead of Holtz and Prunty. Dan Miller was fourth while David McCardle raced to his best career finish in fifth.

In other Midwest modified action, Russ Grade picked up the win in the dash and Dale Prunty was the fastest qualifier at 12.535 seconds.

July 28th, 2002 - Slinger Super Speedway

Russ Grade earned his first career Midwest modified 30-lap feature the hard way by outracing three of the division’s top drivers at the finish.

Andy Evraets paced the beginning laps as Grade charged into second place on lap five. Jeff Holtz, Wes Biswell, and Dan Jung sliced their way through the field to enter the top five by lap ten. Grade ventured to the outside lane in a bid to pass Evraets for the top spot and after a lap of racing side by side, lunged into the lead. Evraets became trapped on the inside and slid back, allowing Holtz, Biswell, and Jung to all get by.

Mike Graczkowski and Dan Miller spun in turn two, slowing the race under the caution flag on lap 19. Grade led the restart and kept his car in front of Holtz, Biswell, and Jung to maintain the lead. Lenny Gallenberg and Ed Grober had an impromptu meeting of sorts on lap 21 that began in turn three and continued all the way down the front stretch before ending in turn two to produce the second caution flag of the race.

Grade was up to the task as the green waved again and he held off the three hotshoes behind him to capture his first career Midwest modified feature victory. Holtz finished second followed by Biswell and Jung. Evraets completed another strong race with a fifth place finish.

In other Modified action, Evraets won the fast dash while Dan Miller set fast time with 12.653 second lap.

July 23rd, 2002 - Nationals - Slinger Super Speedway

Dan Jung continued his winning ways at Slinger by posting the victory in the 35-lap Midwest modified feature.
Jung started on the outside of the front row and by lap four had broken away from the pack to secure the lead. Wes Biswell slotted into second while Andy Evraets and Jeff Holtz battled for third. Holtz won the battle for third on lap ten while Biswell remained glued to Jung’s rear bumper.

Dale Prunty charged from back in the field to grab fourth as the top four drivers in the season point standings held the first four positions. Jung and Biswell appeared to be evenly matched which meant that while Biswell could stay with Jung, he was unable to pass and Jung took the win. Biswell settled for second and Holtz was third. Prunty finished fourth and Evraets was fifth. Prunty was also the fastest qualifier with a lap of 12.539 seconds.

July 21st, 2002 - Slinger Super Speedway

Dale Prunty (#17) earned his fifth Midwest Modified feature win of the 2002 season here at Slinger Super Speedway.

Dale Prunty placed himself at the head of the field at the finish of the Midwest modified 30-lap feature to take top honors in the main event for the fifth time this season.

Dan Miller shot into the lead at the start as Prunty, Larry Reihbrandt, Wes Biswell, and Jeff Holtz scrambled for positions behind him. Miller was able to hold off Prunty’s challenges during the early going as Biswell became the first of the front-runners to experience problems when he slowed and exited the event on lap eight with mechanical problems.

Prunty was finally able to power by Miller to take command on lap ten and Holtz followed in his tire tracks to pull into second place while Miller fell to third. Holtz and Prunty began to distance themselves from Miller, Mike Graczkowski, and Reihbrandt when Holtz’s car developed a leak and he was shown the black flag. At the same time, Holtz was having his problems, Graczkowski, Russ Grade, and Ron Schmitt all spun in turn one to produce a caution flag.

Prunty led the field back to green as Reihbrandt, Dan Jung, and Ed Grober gave chase. Prunty’s only scare over the final laps was when the lapped car of David McCardle drifted up the track and briefly made contact with Prunty as he drove by. The contact proved to be very minor and Prunty drove to the victory over Reihbrandt, Jung, and Grober. Lenny Gallenberg finished fifth.

In other Midwest modified action, Jung won the dash and Holtz was the fastest qualifier with a lap of 12.677 seconds.

July 14th, 2002 - Slinger Super Speedway

Wes Biswell drove to his second win of the season in the 30-lap Midwest modified feature.

Mike Graczkowski led Gregg Pawelski and Biswell at the drop of the green flag as Dan Miller and Larry Reihbrandt spun on lap three. Biswell got around Pawelski for second a few laps later and pressured Graczkowski for the lead. Graczkowski suddenly spun out of the lead on lap seven and the field was slowed under the caution flag. Biswell held the lead on the restart and pulled away when Pawelski and Russ Grade decided to race each other for second.

While Pawelski and Grade fought for second, Dale Prunty and Jeff Holtz were marching through the field and entered the top five. Prunty and Holtz first were able to get by Pawelski and then went to work on Grade for second while Biswell continued to lead. Prunty, Holtz, and Grade bounced off each other a few times before Grade was shuffled back to fifth place by lap 25. Biswell maintained his lead and took the win over Prunty and Holtz. Ed Grober moved up to capture the fourth position and Grade finished fifth.

In other Midwest modified action, Biswell won the dash and Holtz was the fastest qualifier with a lap of 12.613 seconds.

July 7th, 2002 - Slinger Super Speedway

Dan Jung won the 30-lap Midwest modified feature and gained points on point leader Dale Prunty, who experienced mechanical problems and did not finish the event.

Russ Grade led the first eight laps before giving way to Mike Graczkowski as Jeff Holtz, Wes Biswell, and Jung advanced through traffic and into the top five. Jung took over second place on lap 15 and Holtz and Biswell followed him to nail down the third and fourth positions. Greg Legate spun on lap 20 to bring out the caution flag with Graczkowski leading Jung, Holtz, and Biswell.

It took Jung two laps to get around Graczkowski for the lead as Holtz and Biswell also made their way by for second and third. Holtz and Biswell remained in Jung’s tire tracks as the laps wound down but any chance they had at challenging Jung was negated when they got together on the backstretch and jammed up the field. Jung took the win while Holtz was able to make it around for second ahead of Biswell and Graczkowski. Grade was fifth.

Dan Jung won the fast dash while Wes Biswell set fast time with a 12.618 second.

Dale Prunty (#17) scored the victory in the Midwest Modified main event this evening

Going for the lead Dale Prunty (#17) surpasses Ed Groeber (#39) on his way to winning the Midwest Modified feature.

Dale Prunty has become a familiar face in Victory Circle following Midwest modified features this season and Wednesday was no exception as he captured top honors in the 30-lap main event.

Ed Grober jumped into the lead at the start over Andy Evraets and Russ Grade as Mike Graczkowski and Prunty dueled for the fourth position. Evraets, Grade, and Graczkowski tangled in turn two on lap five to slow the field under caution and move Prunty to second place behind Grober for the restart. As the race got underway again, Prunty wasted little time in advancing toward the front as he grabbed the lead on lap eight. Dan Jung and Jeff Holtz closed on Larry Reihbrandt for sixth.

Reihbrandt had some sort of problem on lap 13 and headed toward the wall entering turn one, carrying Holtz wide and setting back both drivers briefly. As Prunty pulled away at the head of the field, Dan Miller passed Grober for second while Wes Biswell, Jung, and Holtz began to move up again.

Biswell made his way around Grober for third on lap 25 while Jung and Holz were banging wheels for fifth. Prunty held off Miller for the win as Biswell raced to a third place finish. Jung came out on top of his battle with Holtz for fifth. Holtz also set fast time with 12.683 seconds.

Wes Biswell and Jeff Holtz entered the top five by lap 15 and five laps later, the two found themselves in second and  third behind the leader, Jung.  Biswell and Holtz couldn't get close enough to challenge over the final ten laps and Jung took the win.  Graczkowski was fourth and Larry Reihbrandt was fifth.

Evraets won the Midwest modified dash and Holtz turned the fastest lap in qualifying at 12.608 seconds.

June 23rd, 2002 - Slinger Super Speedway

Jeff Holtz defeated Dale Prunty to win the Midwest modified feature that was shortened to 25-laps due to time constraints.

Gregg Pawelski and Larry Reihbrandt led the field to the start and Reihbrandt gained the advantage to lead the opening laps.  Andy Evraets was third and Ed Grober was fourth as Holtz and Prunty began to march towards the front after starting deep in the field.   Reihbrandt's car kicked loose while exiting turn two on lap three and when he chased it up the racetrack, Pawelski was forced to slam on the binders, allowing Evraets to sneak by on the inside and take the lead.  Evraets began to stretch out his lead while Holtz and Prunty raced their way into second and third by lap ten.

Dan Miller suffered a flat tire and spun on lap 12, bringing out the caution flag and leaving Evraets with the difficult task of holding off both Holtz and Prunty for the restart.  Evraets made a valiant effort but it only lasted one lap as Holtz powered around him for the lead on lap 14 and Prunty followed suite to take second three laps later.

The race was halted under the red flag on lap 18 when Wes Biswell suffered mechanical problems and dropped fluid on the track, collecting Russ Grade, Lenny Gallenberg, and Larry Epright in a hard crash in turn three.  Neither driver reported any serious injuries and the race was shortened to 25 laps following the delay.  Holtz was strong on the restart and led the final laps to score the win over Prunty and Evraets.  Reihbrandt finished fourth and Ed Grober was fifth. Dan Jung won the dash and Prunty once again led qualifying with a lap of   12.710 seconds.

June 16th, 2002 - Slinger Super Speedway

Dan Jung raced to his second feature win of the season in the 30-lap Midwest modified main event.

Gregg Pawelski led the first four laps before Jung took over on lap five as Andy Evraets, Lenny Gallenberg, and Mike Graczkowski followed close behind. Evraets raced around Pawelski to take second by lap ten and Graczkowski passed Gallenberg to take fourth place.

Graczkowski quickly found his way around Pawelski for third by the race’s halfway point as Jung continued to show the way over Evraets. Dale Prunty and Jeff Holtz worked their way from deep in the field to get within sight of the leaders by lap 20. Graczkowski moved around Evraets for second and he brought Prunty with him to take third as Evraets fell back into a battle with Holtz.

Lapped traffic became a factor over the final laps as first Prunty became trapped behind a slower car with two laps to go and then on the final lap Graczkowski made contact with another lapped machine as Jung extended his lead. Graczkowksi was able to keep moving but the incident slowed him down enough to allow Prunty to pass him and finish second as Jung scored the win. Graczkowski settled for third as Holtz held off Wes Biswell to finish fourth and fifth respectively.

Biswell won the fast dash and Prunty was the fastest qualifier with a lap of 12.561 seconds.

Graczkowski came out on top of the battle and by lap 25, worked his way past Grade for second. One lap later, Grade spun while running third allowing Evraets, Jung, and Miller to move up as the race remained under the green flag. The top six ran two-by-two until Miller was able to maneuver his way into the lead with an outside pass on Pawelski on lap 22. Prunty followed Miller around Pawelski and took over second place while Holtz and Biswell closed in on the lead cars.

Prunty powered around Miller to take the lead with two laps to go as Holtz charged into third. Holtz and Miller made contact in turn four on the final lap causing Miller to spin. Miller fended off all challenges until Biswell was finally able to get by following a lap 27 caution for a Mike Graczkowski spin in turn four.

Prunty and Holtz appeared to have strong cars but their campaign for the win ended with two laps to go when they made contact while racing down the backstretch, resulting in Prunty spinning to produce a caution and Holtz being placed at the rear of the field for the restart.
